Christmas in Paper Crowns

Remembering the paper crown tradition in Australia always has me feeling nostalgic...

The air is crisp, the night is alive,

And the festivities are in overdrive.

The season’s here, so full of cheer,

After much anticipation all year.

The tree is put up with quickened pace,

A smile plays on every friendly face.

The warmth of hugs, our cheeks are red,

Paper crowns upon our heads.

With carols sung and candles lit,

Jokes all said without a wit.

We share our gifts, our hearts, our cheer,

And celebrate with those we hold dear.

When I was young, I'd sit and think,

I wouldn't even sleep a wink.

But now that dinner is done, so am I,

Off to get some needed shut-eye.

Then morning is here, and it's an early one,

The young cousins are screaming that Santa's come!

The gifts are all passed around

And there's not a sour face to be found.

When that is done we're ready for more food,

More laughter, the paper hats again to lift the mood.

The moments shared with family and friends,

To bring in our day to its graceful end.

Raindrops dance on summer’s breeze,

The smell of petrichor among the leaves.

We gather close, both near and far,

Just happy to be where we are.
