Choice.

Choice: the opportunity or power to make a decision.

To feel every color at once isn't as beautiful as it sounds

So I painted myself blue today

A choice.

I liked it better than yesterday

When I was mostly yellows

Until I turned shades of orange

Which led to the inevitable reds.

Those days

The moment I open my eyes

I know I need to be put back to bed

A day full of reds always needs to end.

And if I’m being honest

I don’t get much say

In which colors win their chance to play

But that’s the price you learn to pay

When you choose to live another day.

And when I sleep

The blues and greens

Fight the reds and oranges

And the pinks and yellows

Make way for the purples.

These colors swirl in my belly

Before reaching my mind

And I hope

Whichever color won this time

Is a good color.

But when my colors

Are picked by only me

I feel free.

So it felt really good to be blue today

The way blue trickles into my crevices

Binding bone to skin.

A day where it’s me

That gets to win.
