An Ekphrastic Sonnet

Softness is no synonym for weakness

Wild, wailing wars are woven from whispers

Quislings and quidnuncs spread subtle madness

Grapevines throttle more throats than grim gangsters

Gossip and rumor and innuendo

Trickling from moist lips to ravenous ears

Shatter more dreams than the most savage blow

Shadowy slights loose sargassos of tears

Scuttlebutt’s scalpel has sliced senators

Backchat has brought brawny brutes to their knees

Lurid, lascivious lunch libelers

Have to secret vaults secured sweaty keys

Calm calumnies have destroyed dynasties

One wagging tongue can change all destinies

Ekphrastic

I love the Churchill "quote" about lies and rumours: "A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to put its pants on," though it may originate elsewhere. Great poetry
