Character Voices

the voices of the characters an author hears before creating them

By Erica NicolayPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

I look beyond the myst and see

The voices that were calling me;

Loud, and gentle, whispered, and shrill,

They’ve often called me at their will.

Glimpses of their forms, I catch,

threaded, interwoven—stashed

Far back within my brain,

And locked away will they remain.

Throughout the day, they’re pacified,

And I will hear their earnest cries

But hardly let them dare to speak,

For I have work that I must keep.

But ah, when night has come at last,

Those voices swell and like a mass,

All arguing to just be heard,

I wager I’ll put in a word.

But arguing they quite enjoy,

And hours I should soon employ

If I regarded, praised, or questioned

Very whim or slight suggestion.

Some I hear, and do write down

Their words of wisdom—others sound,

And I must cast aside their talk,

For it is unimportant..Not

That I have hours yet to spend,

For as the time now nears 2:10,

I must repose, or they will shriek

And steal from me my precious sleep!

tomorrow, we can talk again,

And you give me ideas, but when

I’m tired, you may not.

For I must sleep. You see the clock…
