There’s a certain kind peace
When the kids are all asleep
Or when you’re moving to a beat.
When you take your first sip of coffee
And it’s a good one.
It’s a peace like when you find the right music
for your mood, weather, and task ahead.
When a candle you lit
is the perfect scent.
When your environment for one moment
Is right and when
Life works.
It’s the kind of peace like a play
drawn up by the coach on a board
and then perfectly executed
by the whole team to score.
Like when a dish tastes even better
than it smelled on the grill.
When you are thrilled with your labor,
And the final product is what you dreamed of.
The kind of peace after a good long hot shower
When you’re really really clean.
When you slip on a perfectly fitting pair of jeans.
When another person understands
Exactly what you mean.
When a child belly laughs with abandon.
And when human relationships work.
All this world has to offer
Is tiny tastes of peace.
Poor reflections of something real,
small momentary relief
From the chaos and disorder
That we buried beneath
Every day in this sin-sick world.
But someday, someday.
This broken world will be remade.
All things will be right,
The new world will be
beautiful and free,
And filled with real
peace.
Until then,
may we see
these small tastes of peace,
this momentary relief
As gifts and reprieve
from our good God.
