Catch of the Day
A Mythical Creature & the Unusual. Poetry, Day Five.
The sign proclaims: Mermaid walking.
Command or warning
She does not pause to make plans
Instead puts her back into it
Sucks in her gills, because man
Uttered “ugly thing,” the other
Day as she passed him while minding
Her business, on her side of the side
—walk, making haste, making busy,
These newborn, flailing limbs do not
Move forward, move away by themselves.
Is it easy, land-bound bloke, to take
The measure of this prize, tooth to tail,
Size up how worthy, this Catch of the Day
Weighs upon tipped scales, string her up
To observe, mental images committed
To memory, to gab which the boys over
A couple of beers, to brag and debate on
How well she measures up to your other fish?
