Can You See Me?

Watch For My True Colors

I am the book.

You approach me certain sure

that you can run your finger down my spine

and pull me from the shelf sure of what you will find inside.

You read the story you expect to see between brightly colored covers.

No surprises- fully formed a story already written in the way you decree.

But that's not me.

The story is mine to write, the ending belongs to me

The pages bear words not meant for you;

my life a gift once freely offered, I will reclaim and redeem.

-

I am the mirror

shiny surface smooth and slickly cool

reflecting back what you desire of me.

Pick me up when you want to interact.

Show me to others so they can see their expectations meet their gaze.

Polish and admire me then place me on the shelf when my usefulness is gone.

But that's not me.

You see only silver shining but my eyes know

a rainbow is on the back of the glass,

delighting my heart and safely hidden until it can be revealed.

-

I am the chameleon

blending in I change to stay hidden

becoming one with the expectations surrounding my life

my aim to be unremarkable, forgettable, safe.

Living day to day until I can escape

I camouflage my true colors to keep the peace.

That was me, then.

Now I stroll at my own pace, finding my own way

being my true self. And sometimes, when I choose,

proudly spreading my true fan of color to bless those with eyes to see.

I love how this felt like a journey with an ending that was so uplifting. Thank you for sharing, well done :)

  • Great words, I have incredible difficulty being ignored by certain people, especially when they do it deliberately, big hugs. I always feel guilty if I miss others' work.
