Strangers,

living life in opposite directions,

with no desire to change —

but denial never works

when the heart speaks first.

Unable to restrain feelings

we thought only lived in movies,

we stand here,

faced with life’s most fulfilling desire.

Without a single word,

our eyes take over conversations

like a school bully,

refusing to give the voice

any attention.

“Hello” feels too simple

for what we feel inside —

so we say nothing,

and let silence speak for us.

Every smile yells “follow me”

like a child with nowhere to go

but everywhere in mind.

You say you’re safe —

not with words,

but with the deep breaths you take,

expressing your comfort.

I think to myself:

how can two people dressed so simple

feel so lavish?

Finally, taking a seat

gives us time to game-plan

a strategy fitting

for our greatest challenge yet —

keeping one another

away from the prize that is us.

But gravity works.

We’d find out

that pushing away

isn’t an answer.

When you reach for my hand,

I freeze —

understanding your touch

may be the last

from someone new.

I don’t hold back.

I embrace your touch,

and finally grasp

what real love feels like.

Tears of joy

fill the soul that can’t cry externally,

and your strength

becomes mine.

Together, we realize

this will be more than a good time —

but a long time.
