Why does the caged bird sing?
Does it sing for the sky?
It's wish to soar high?
Or does it sing, to sing.
Does it sing to find why?
Does it sing to say hi?
Does it sing to unload?
All its worries and woes?
Or does it sing to sing.
Perhaps it sings to stay happy?
Perhaps that's way too sappy?
Does it sing in fear?
Or does it sing to sing.
In my addled mind
I can feel the reason why
Time after time
It sings its song on high
It sings to sing
As you breathe to live
Even in a cage
Even when you're enraged
You breathe to breathe
As it sings to sing.
