Bruises and Blisters

The Reality of Love Poems

By Poppy Published 3 years ago Updated 2 years ago 1 min read

I would carve my heart out

If it meant it could be yours

They say wrong timing is

The worst kind of enemy

And I didn't believe them until

It was holding me by the throat

Watching the air escape my lungs

We write soft poems about love

But really it is brutal, isn't it?

I have a ghost haunting me but it

Looks too much like you to be the

Thing of horror films and I still

Have bruises and marks on my

Fingers from trying to pry my rib cage open

Just to get the beating inside

To quiet enough for me to sleep and

I still have blisters on my heels

From running

And running

And running

In a kind of way that got me nowhere

In my dreams I am writing

Those soft poems on your skin

In my nightmares you are

Backing away from me before

My hands can touch you

In reality you are a

Room and a lifetime away

Looking down at the floor

As I stare straight at you

Love is brutal! They say “it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all”, but I am skeptical. I would rather have the desire to love than the heartbreak of loving someone who doesn’t love back.
