Broken Hearts Still Must Beat

Valentine's Day for the broken hearts

What is it with the months of Winter?

Cold to freeze hearts, liable to splinter-

Yet it's the time we are huddled together

Trying to keep in the warmth.

-

We navigate the feast of Thanksgiving-

Pretending the enforced jollity of December isn't lurking-

Around the corner, and the 'perfect gift' really exists

And this year it all will work out.

-

January brings the stress of resolutions-

Where we resolve to fix ourselves and pick the right solutions-

While we yearn to be recognized as enough RIGHT NOW

And be accepted just as we are.

-

February's false assurances that Winter's halfway over-

We pray that groundhog ducks and retains its cover-

Is the prelude to the roses, sweets, and amplified passions

That can shatter the hearts of the frozen.

-

When it seems the whole world's preoccupied with a lover-

When there's no place for your heart to find solace and cover-

When even children exchange the Ninja Turtles paper missives of love

Some hearts retain the cold icy ache of Winter.

-

It may be a heartache that lingers, bruised and battered from youth-

It may be it shattered when learning a frightening truth-

It may be it splintered, fractured, torn and rendered in tatters-

It may be it's reeling from horrifying matters-

It may be it's shrunken, reduced, struck over and over-

It may be resigned, anticipating yet another disclosure-

It may be sodden from crying, or beaten and tough-

Whatever it is, for those hearts; it's ENOUGH.

-

Those broken but beating hearts ken the anticipation

With which you greet the sugared and flowered participation

In the February spectacle of fondant fondness and pairing

But- don't you see?- they are already at capacity.

-

For broken, bruised, frozen hearts go on- they must beat

Their strength and resolve tested and not met defeat-

Alone, separated, mourning, cheated, abused

Awaiting the thawing of Spring; their heart beats still.

Not all of my poetic musings are sad (although that's OK if they were!)

Really lovely piece. I love reading poetry written about/in winter now in the heat of summer. I'll look forward to Ninja Turtles cards in February. Great work!

  • I really like your non-sad poem. This part I luv, and I swear to you before I even started reading I got an icy chill, I was like, why am I so cold all of a sudden. Must've been your words resonating through ..."Some hearts retain the cold icy ache of Winter."

I liked how you one brought us through each of those months leading up to February. And the last line was splendid. Beautiful writing :)
