Her days measured by Diet Cokes and pills,

She clings to hope that things will be OK

And all consumed by mediocre thrills.

.

And yet society, with all its ills,

Maintains its grip and ever-forceful sway—

Her days measured by Diet Cokes and pills.

..

She forgets to mail checks on past-due bills

Though her bank account holds enough to pay

And all consumed by mediocre thrills.

Fever dream marked by fits of rage and chills,

She feels rationality slip away—

Her days measured by Diet Cokes and pills.

….

An emergency call to her shrink stills

The voices she can barely keep at bay

And all consumed by mediocre thrills.

…..

It’s an escalating battle of wills

Of sound mind and manic, though come what may

Her days measured by Diet Cokes and pills

And all consumed by mediocre thrills.

sad poetry
