The humming will be what gets me
Or the too bright lights
God is it ever quiet,
Now it’s too quiet
There’s no in-between
A constant give and take
Of feast or famine,
The usual struggle
Of 9-5
When I would rather be
Anywhere but here
But specifically hidden
In a corner of a cafe
With an iced drink
And a notebook poised
And waiting
For my pen to dance across it
And throw out the thoughts
That have been spinning
But how to make sense
Of a rush of nonsense-
An ever changing image
Of the past overlapping
With today
And the tomorrow we want
But the tomorrow I know
I just know
We will get
And the same words run
Through my mind
In that tone I despise
And why don’t you think it will work out
And I choose to not answer
Because my real answer
Oh you wouldn’t like that
It may crash that perfect image
Maybe destroy that all-knowing look
That makes my skin itch,
So I say nothing and you answer instead
Because you’re used to being let down
And I don’t deny it,
Because partially its true
But you would never admit
That there’s more than 1 way
To be let down
And you refuse the responsibility of such a-
The phone is ringing
Is anyone going to get that?
No, of course not
It’s just me.
