Boys Love in Blue. Girls Love in Pink.
A poem about unraveling self-acceptance
I was a little girl
Who was taught to follow the rules
Color in the lines, or be ridiculed
___
Boys love in blue
And girls love in pink
But if I love in purple, what will they think?
___
I’ll hide my love for rainbows
So I appear conventional
But when I’m self-reflecting, I feel multidimensional
___
As a young woman
I see a boy share his true colors
And in due time, I see countless others
___
Flourishing with permission
I feel safe to explore
Their courage sparks a light in me I’ve never felt before
___
When I first proclaim
That purple is for me
I finally start to own it, I’m finally set free
___
So I’m thankful for all the people
Who stood up and disagreed
___
I’m thankful for all the people
Who respect my identity
___
I’m thankful for all the people
Who suffered so we could see
___
That every color of the rainbow
Deserves to love honestly
