Boot Songs.

For "The Sound of First Frost" Challenge.

By Cathy (Christine Acheini) Ben-Ameh.Published 3 months ago 1 min read

It begins with shoes.
The soft squeak of leather on wet pavement,
a rhythm stitched from drizzle and decision.
Sneakers retire to closets
and boots take their solemn post by the door.

The air smells faintly metallic,
like the edge of a coin,
and the street hums with early surrender,
tires sighing, puddles whispering,
leaves giving up their last applause.

Each step tells the story,
water darkening suede,
heels finding their careful balance
on the glassy promise of cold.
Even the ground has learned to listen.

The boots are not beautiful,
only faithful.
They keep warmth where warmth belongs,
they say we are past pretending
that autumn will last.

In their steady rhythm
I hear the season closing its throat,
a hush before the world begins again,
the sound of first frost
spoken softly from the soles of our feet.

I love the way you can write a poem about the most mundane object, like boots! And you manage to add so much feeling to them, it made me nostalgic for my pretty wellies I used when I was living in the city. You're very talented, Cathy! Never stop writing! ;)

  • Ah yes. The time of year approaches when we need to appreciate our boots.

  • A beautiful poem, Cathy. I imagine that those feet have been to many, many places.

This was such a cosy little read, it really captures that seasonal feeling. One of my favourite things about the colder months is that I finally get to wear my boots again!

I really like your use of imagery in this piece! You do a great job at describing that feeling when autumn starts to give way to winter.

This scratched a part of my brain I didn't know itched. Love your style, and the imagery gave me chills. Something deeply nostalgic and moving about the themes here. Thank you for sharing your brilliance.
