Blue whale found

beached outside of Oil Piers.

Seventy-eight feet, floated

in the channel for days

before reaching the Ventura coastline.

After landing in the summer heat,

onshore wind carried the fifty-ton smell

for miles. Roadside witnesses

leaned heavy as telephone poles

over the caution tape,

offering their children

a somber view of our last colossus.
