Worn blue eyes with gold flecks,

My eye color adapts to the blue and green tones,

Of my outfits accordingly.

And blonde hair

Once natural and sun-kissed,

now demanding over $100 every 8 weeks or so…

I am a teacher of our American youth,

And I am not a Nazi.

My beloved Sixth-grade students,

A sea of brown and black shades,

Sometimes adorned with brightly patterned head scarfs,

Ask me why.

Why Nazis believed that the best humans,

Had blue eyes and blonde hair?

I say, “Life has been unfair,

To so many in a world

That refuses to be colorblind.

In America, we have the freedom,

To reach our potential and be,

Whatever we choose if we are willing to work.”

My students look at me and think,

“She is so white! What does she know?”

I look at them with more wisdom than they realize and whisper,

“If only I were as beautiful as you!”
