Smoke and broken windows

An electric bug zapper

Two young girls walking

in the middle of the street

A sweet shop that never closes

A man who sleeps in the bus shelter

and can see the future

A slashed tire

Ten nails connected with wire

A solitary syringe

Patches of honeysuckle

A bull carcass

All the trash cans on the block ablaze

Brown snow

to match the grass

New rust on your sister’s car

A friend who never came back home

A woman whose smile

you are never allowed to see

Vomit under the tree

Your granddad

who still haunts his house

A new neighbour you hear beating his wife

A woman who chain-smokes

and never steps into the sunlight.

Dirty socks on the sidewalk

A boy who takes care of his sick mother.

An old lady who hands you

crabapples over the fence

A condom with grass stuck on it

A rabbit waiting to get hit

A young man they found in the alley

A boy you believed was your brother

A sunset you only see for a moment

Something your mother

said didn’t exist

surreal poetry
