Blood of the Wolf: The Visitor

Now let me tell you this, my Viking brethren,

a tale of the day, for a woman came to my door,

her shoulders draped in furs,

her chest bleeding silver.

I offered my hearth and home

and tended to her wounds,

but no herbal remedy, nor searing fire

could close the hole above her heart.

So for three days and nights

silver seeped from her wound

and soaked into her clothes and bandages,

until she was drained and shriveled up in her cloak.

On the dawn of the fourth day the woman was dead,

and so I buried her beneath an oak tree

high on a mountain top

along with the clothes soaked

in her silver blood.

But, heed me now, Vikings

For not long ago after the night of the full moon

I found her grave was disturbed -

her body missing, and swirling up from the ground

veins of silver gleamed in the branches of the oak tree.

Now, the silver tree lays untouched

as it produces silver,

like a farm grows wheat.

But a warning:

should you search for it and find it,

don’t rest beneath its boughs

under a full moon.

The woman still comes,

called by her own blood.

This trove of bloody riches

should be best left to this:

another tale of the day.
