Block Work

The voice of a young black man from the hood

By Alexis JasminPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

Dear Black men,

You are special , you were created to be all that you dream of being.

It is not your fault that the odds were stacked against you . It is not your fault that you can't see beyond your struggle for long enough to see and be able to chase your dreams. For as long as I have a voice I will use it . Someone has got to tell your story .

I titled this "Block work" because where I am from that is all a lot of brothers know. How to "wake up and cake up" by way of hitting the block.

Meanwhile we live in a world full of endless opportunity and there are so many ways to be successful in this world without risking your freedom

But

What do you do when the streets are all you know.

You make it work .

Block Work .

Tick Tock its hit the block O'clock

These burdens I carry are because my bro just got shot

You can't hear my voice because you dare not to listen

My first life lesson was how to cook dope in the kitchen

You see my pants saggin and assume

Pants saggin , don't know better

Noone showed me the way

My daddy walked out the door even when ma asked him to stay

Contribute to my demise ; for my arrest you wont hesitate to pitch in

Give me a break , if you dare to really care just maybe I'll listen

Screw the appearance lets talk about my pain

How my j's are all muddy and with blood their all stained

Story of my life

I didn't ask for this, they just threw me in it

But I made the best that I could but who cares if i finish

Finish this story that someone else chose to write

Write the pages of my secrets , the institution calls it a kite

I was thrown behind bars, deprived of my freedom

Left my girl with our baby, who knows how she's gon feed him

Im recreating a cycle

Living out a portrait I didn't paint

I just pray for my baby, my true love that his life I don't taint

They say the love of a child is truly unconditional

I would love to show him something different

I don't know if I can , I don't believe I am gifted

Solid

Unbreakable

A Strong Black KING I can be

I promise I can do better if only someone cared to teach me.

The voice of a young black man from a neighborhood with little to NO opportunity.
