Black College Girl

Inspired by 'Dear White People' on Netflix

By Victoria MartinPublished 8 years ago 1 min read

Let's see... I'm the black girl

Who has enough sass

And just the right amount of class

But doesn't have the butt to please your image

of what a "black woman" should be.

I always try my best to make diction sound as perfect as possible so

I don't sound ghetto to the ignorant brain that you have in your head.

You really think that I care that you listen to more black music than I do?

You really think that I care that you can twerk better than a black girl ever could?

Please understand that I am trying to get an education because I want to change this nation

And if you don't like what I have to say then you can change this station

You try to tell me that getting an education is "being white"

At least I'm not out selling drugs on the street at night

To my white friends who tell me how I should feel about race

Try to at least understand me and put yourself in my place

I know it's hard to understand what's it's like to be in my shoes

That talking about race is awkward and all you wanna do is hit snooze

Stay awake for this conversation I know it's hard

That whenever I talk about race you wanna put up a guard

But in order to change the world, the conversation starts with YOU and ME

Having communication is important and it's part of the key
