Black
This poem was inspired by the Hive at Leslie Gulch

The sun is setting, smearing pinks and purples
The clouds are swollen, drifting slowly across the open sky
A dirt road provides for a long and bumpy ride
Twisting and turning, then dipping down sharply
Into a valley that would forever change my life
Hundreds of feet tall, towers of rocks stretch their rocky walls
The perfect campsite sits nestled between small pines
The sky is black with stars taking up every single space
The milky way is thick and seen easily by the eyes
But the Hive is the golden nugget to the place that we have come
Rocks smooth and chunk and climb over each other
Towering, growing, between tunnels, caves, and cliffs
Climbing and sliding and grasping at cracks
Until the top is reached as the high rock peaks sit quietly in a circle
As if inviting you to drink in the view of pure outer space
The dark and wildness of the night is just frightening enough
But the view, the stars, and the galaxies are just elegant enough
He holds me close as we stare upwards
Even the dog in a tangible pool of awe
The world feels complete
As the blackness of the entire universe surrounds us
Like the biggest, warmest, and most loving hug
The silence, the stillness, the blackness is nothing to fear
For it is the ultimate form of relaxed expression
A serene place that we will return to once again
