Bittersweet Ashes

A poem of heartbreak

By Andrew C McDonaldPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read

Your love set me afire

And burnt my heart to ash

I put myself in your hands

You threw me out with the trash

———

Promises sworn in dark of night

Vows of always and forever

Shattered on break of morning light

Leading only to the land of never

———

Here I sit sifting through the wreckage

Cooling ash coating burnt fingers

Wondering what more could I have done

As the patina of you lingers

Was I too eager to please?

Was I not eager enough?

Was my affection too silken

My love perhaps too rough?

———

I’d beg you to come back

Plead at your feet

But you’d only spurn me again

Burn me in your icy heat

———

So I’ll try my level best

To douse the smoldering coals

Cool the lingering heat

Of a bonfire sparked on sinking shoals

heartbreak
