Billy’s Christmas Worry
For Poppy’s Prompts | #12, December Edition

I closed my eyes in the night so deep
Knowing full well, too excited to sleep
Sugarplum fairies dance to and fro
Shining like tinsel wherever they go
I giggled to see such a lovely sight
Here in my room on Christmas Eve night
A wreath formed of moonlight, lovely and golden
Shone on my wall, it’s beauty quite molten
Reflected by dreamcatcher upon my window glass
A prismatic form of no true mass
For up in the sky - crisp, cool, and clear
Stars shone bright since Santa was near
Mom was in the kitchen baking up sweets
Gingerbread cookies a tasty fragrant treat
Dad was in the living room reading his paper
By candlelit flame, a wavering taper
Slipping from my bed I crept to the landing
Giggling when I saw where now they were standing
Mom was blushing neath a mistletoe twig
While Dad planted on her a kiss quite big
A fire was burning, logs hissing and popping
I worried it might keep Santa from stopping
I careened down the stairs, frantic and afraid
Despite in my room I should truly have stayed
Dad said, “Whoa there skipper, what’s the big hurry?”
He laughed when I told him my most earnest worry
“Santa is magic so there’s truly naught to fear.
Plus he always dresses in fireproof gear.”
Mama leaned down, placing a peck on my cheek
“He flies around the world in a seventh of a week.
He has magical reindeer to pull his big sleigh,
And Rudolph's red nose to light up the way.
But he doesn’t come if children are awake
So best off to sleep and don’t try to fake.”
I looked at our tree, entranced by the sight
Knowing would be surrounded by presents in dawn’s early light
So back up the stairs meekly I went
Praying my letter was delivered to where it was sent
