Heavier and sooner than ever before.

Nothing can prepare you for that first fall.

A cruel mock in a quiet whisper.

Is it not beautiful? They tell me.

As the flakes begin to pile and set,

my heart weighs deeper and my spine

slumps lower. Lower, lower.

I miss the wonder in her eyes.

The smile on her cheeks and

the warmth her soul would give

to a bitter day like this.

It is the same each year.

Now I watch from my window,

alone.

Searching for something

beyond the falling snow.
