Beware of Jorogumo!

Haiku for the Poetry of The Hunt Challenge

By Lana V LynxPublished 3 months ago Updated 3 months ago 1 min read
Annita Maslov, Jorogumo (2025). Beinart Gallery, Brunswick, Australia

Jorogumo sits

Tense, on her toes, patiently

observing her prey.

***

The woman spider

Has all the time in the world

She is in no rush.

***

Cold and curious,

She calculates steps needed

To jump the prey fast.

***

Her short prey stares back,

Petrified by her long limbs:

How many total?

***

Five? No, six, one hides

Behind the dress. Plus two arms.

How fast does she run?

***

Not faster than me!

The prey shakes off the stupor,

Turns around to run.

***

You will never know

If the prey escaped away.

The art is static.

***

But you imagine

The woman spider's hunt-and-

play with the scared prey.

***

Eating the tired prey

is Jorogumo's reward.

She'd happily smile

***

When she finally

Gobbles up her prey. Always pray

YOU are not her prey.

This is the first I heard of this creature, but I sure was creeped out. You had a lot of creativity writing this peace. Nicely Done!!!

The picture says “Australia” and they are known for that huge spider. Ugh. I find spiders fascinating and love to look at their webs but definitely do t want one chasing me or wandering in my bed as I sleep 😬 Good luck!

This art piece looks so creepy. But ironically, I can't seem to look away. 🕷️ Thank goodness the name isn't as frightening as she is. - it's a terrible thing that she's in no rush 🕷️ She's even to the point of calculating the steps needed. Damn. I am doomed. - the art is static. So we will never know. Clever, but deeply unsettling. 🕷️ Okay I am scared now. So I will pray that I won't be her next pray. - This was fantastic. I love following her every move as I read. Best of luck in the challenge 🤗❤️🖤👌🏾👏🏾

  • I will just die if I saw her hahahahahaha. I have never heard of Jorogumo before, so I found this very fascinating! Pray you are not her prey, I loved that!

  • I agree. Creative is the first thought that popped in my head. The first I've heard of this creature!! Fascinating!

What a wonderfully creative piece, wrought from tales of Japanese folklore. I admit I had not ever heard of Torogumo, but when I looked up the name and learned more, I found your poem to be all the more enchanting. Loved this one so much.
