Beside Orion’s Belt

(to Laurel)

By Russell GottschalkPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

Beside Orion’s Belt

I was lost for a while, my track in

the snow undetermined;

the darkness making it hard to find

what had been clear path in the daylight.

Crystals of ice crushed beneath my skis;

before me the frozen

field empty, untrammeled, vast white space

with not a trace of a soul passing.

Overhead stars of the Milky Way

twinkled in infinite

glory, yet in their sum offering,

but small light which to navigate by.

Then as I turned to go South to where

forest met with the sky

I found her in the stars looking down

as she waits beside Orion’s belt.

And I knew my journey although not

quite at end would in a

not distant time take me there too, where

if it be, I might see her again.
