Taking bites of a bagel. The seeds fall onto the plate all facing different directions. Some get on the table and the placemat. Playing in the background is white noise to help fill the silence. It's 5:00am. Getting everything together for this day. I'm supposed to take a trip to D— which is such an underwhelming drive. No scenic views, nothing to stop at and enjoy, only roads.
The ticking noise rapidly goes off as I open the car door. I sit in the driver's seat.
Driving down the road, it's raining. I don't turn on the windshield wipers. I enjoy letting the rain build up on the glass. As I drive, the bigger droplets cut a path through the smaller ones. A small pocket at the bottom of the glass doesn't have any rain on it. The car is making a sound that seems to be air rushing through a crack somewhere on the left side of the passenger seat. It hisses. Almost as if it is coming through the broken windshield.
My eyes are strained. There is nothing to fill the silence. My thoughts are wandering. It's too early.
I pull off to the side of the road to rest for a moment. I can't continue down this road in my current state of mind.
I close my eyes. Hearing the rains pattern on the top of my car. It seems to be playing a rhythm.
Grabbing the lever to push the driver's seat back, it flies backwards.
Somewhat startled by the jolting motion that created, my heart rate increases. Slowly falling back into a trance as I give my attention back to the rhythm of the drops, I feel at peace.
Only every so often does a car or semi pass by, shaking the vehicle I reside in. But that motion only brings me more comfort.
How simple.
