Because, Damn

I miss you, my friend

I heard an old song last night

An old Rod Steward hit that I hadn’t heard in twenty years

Your brother tagged me, and you, and our sweet cousin Mary Ann

And damn, how it reminded me of old times

*

I cried last night when I saw your photograph

I’ll admit I haven’t done that for a while

But damn, did those tears flow

Like a waterfall over the shattered rocks of my heart

*

I miss you, my friend

I know you told me not to grieve, to remember the good times

But damn, it’s hard to reminisce about those times

When it just reminds me that there’ll never be another

*

There’ll never be another like you

My friend, my cousin, my buddy

I think of you every day, and the times we spent together

And damn, they were the best times of my life

*

I’m sure as the years go on, and my memory fades

I may forget some of those times, and the people we spent them with

But fear not, I’ll never forget you

And how damn much our friendship meant to me

*

I’m thinking of another song today

An old Pink Floyd classic that you know I love

But I can’t listen to the damn thing anymore

Because it reminds me how much I miss you

*

I know that waterfall will flow again

That ache will weigh heavy on my heart

Because I can’t have even one more day with my friend

And because, damn, how I wish you were here

Pure and raw, I could believe you tapped a spile into your bones and didn't edit a word.
