Beauty's Bulwark

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read
Jean-Leon Gerome, "The Tulip Folly," 1882.

What sort of flower needs the protection

Of a slightly ridiculous, plumed knight?

From what deranged imagination

Came this preposterous, floral fight?

History confirms that this is no joke

Centuries ago, to augment prices

Greed and panic many fragile stems broke;

Supply and demand: ageless devices

What then, should we make of this bold figure?

Is he moved by greed, that basest of drives?

No; another motive gives him vigor:

Protecting fragile beauty, which gilds lives

Making art of this moment shows one thing:

That beauty’s defense is ennobling

    The picture is incongruous and your sonnet conveys this unlikely partnership really well! Mad times indeed!
