Authenticity

A villanelle

I searched for the truth, though I found it not,

Hidden, as it was, in a noisy sea,

A vow’s worth nothing when it can be bought.

/

From friends, parents, loves; honesty I sought,

For, as it’s said, the truth can set you free,

I searched for the truth, though I found it not.

/

Empty promise made; oh, the pain that’s wrought!

Childlike innocence, long stolen from me,

A vow’s worth nothing when it can be bought.

/

Carelessly tossed words, thrown without a thought,

Clung to, a lifeline for a longing plea,

I searched for the truth, though I found it not.

/

Casual lies tie insidious knots,

From clamoring voices, I yearn to flee,

A vow’s worth nothing when it can be bought.

/

The words came cheap, and amounted to nought,

Ever-filtered world makes it hard to see,

I searched for the truth, though I found it not;

A vow’s worth nothing when it can be bought.
