The Kornmod on the Night Sky
Flickers and foretells.
Now summer’s forces
are waning, while the powers of darkness
swing their knife against
the radiant, paper-thin
human optimism.
.
Follow along and breathe the nature in.
The seasons whirl and land anew.
A cyclone of colors is on its way.
Catch it in the brain’s eternal
laws of freezing stillness,
for joy when rain and gray clouds
force us into shelter from the storm.
.
The strength of light has kept us alive.
Follow the light and feel it to your marrow,
shape your joy and live—
until darkness swallows us
on the final day,
known to none.
May your journey be a delight to the soul.
.
Author’s Note
Kornmod is a Danish word for the silent flashes of lightning seen on late summer nights, especially in August, without the rumble of thunder. These fleeting lights signal the shift of seasons, when summer wanes and autumn approaches. In this poem, kornmod becomes both a natural image and a metaphor: it flickers against the gathering darkness, just as human hope, fragile and “paper-thin,” resists the inevitability of decline.
