Asleep and blissfully unaware

You’re lying awake beside me

Staring at the ceiling

Frustrated and dissatisfied

And planning your escape.

*

When I awake

You stretch and smile at me

Good morning love, you whisper

And hop out of our bed.

*

In the shower

Lost in thought

Of the mundane details of my workday

Which in my mind is already underway

But knowing naught of its significance.

*

In the bedroom dripping wet

Towel wrapped around my waist

Rivulets of warm water running down my face

Do you fancy going out tonight hun….

….The words now held in place.

*

The wardrobes stand open

And the drawers do too

Clothes are strewn across the floor

The vanity mirror holds a reflection of you

Slipping out our door.

*

I stumble to the bed

And I sit heavily

My mind fumbling with its new reality

I wish I could say I was strong that day

But in truth, I cried like a baby.

*

I grappled with why you left me

I felt sorrow and self-pity for sure

But it took too long for me to consider

The pain you must have felt too

heartbreak
