Ashes

A poem about heartbreak

I have nothing left

But the ashes

Of our memories

Sifting through the dust

Desperately searching

For meaning

To this destruction

That has come

And burned a wasteland

through my heart

A dying star

Swallowing love and galaxies whole

Searing skin and soul

I thought we would

Hold forever fused together

In a melting of spirit and body

The joy we shared

Eyes glinting laughter

Lighting our evenings

with warmth and care

Did “us” mean nothing to you?

Was I only some time to waste

Playing with matches while

You searched for your North Star?

You said you’d burn for me

Until all the lights died in the sky

Now here I am

Brittle and breaking

As I sift through the ashes of us
