Around the Fireplace
An acrostic poem about the warmth of the holiday season
Family, all settled around the fire where Grandma used to darn the stockings while Grandpa played his guitar.
Ignited with a match, the fire burns, casting a gentle glow on the faces of all who gather there
Remembering Christmases that came before, laughter shared and tears shed. Loss and joy intermingling delicately.
Embers crackling. A contented sigh. Knees tucked up underneath, blankets wrapped tightly.
Pine and cedar smoke wafting on the air, mixing with the smell of cinnamon ornaments on the tree.
Lying on the side table, a bible opened to the book of Luke, from which Mother reads the Nativity story.
Aroma of pecan pie, fresh from the oven. The patter of children’s running feet echoing through the house.
Christmas carols play softly in the background, Nat King Cole singing dreams and hope and love.
Every smile true, every stomach full, every eye glistening, every heart overflowing, every thought suspended in this moment by the fireplace.
