Are We Like the Moon?

a poem on self perception

Are We Like the Moon?

A clear night sky when the world is still,

observe the moon

a magnificent glowing orb settled among the stars

how you can see its craters

each one distinctive

like a flawed perfection

Captivated by its beauty and mystery,

you pull out your phone

taking the moon's most deserving picture

Hazy and grainy, nothing more than a round fuzzy light,

Lacking in beauty, lacking in wonder

this isn't the moon your eyes see in the night sky

Are we like the moon?

As we perceive ourselves in our own judgmental eyes

Is our mind's eye like the camera of a phone

limiting our perception of ourselves, not what others see?

Maybe there is more to us than meets the eye

If only we could remove the haziness of our own judgmental eyes

thoughts that are critical, doubting, and limiting

Maybe we would see ourselves through the mind's eye of another

Through the naked eye, the moon is captivating,

an orb of beauty and wonder,

If we could see ourselves through the mind's eye of another,

then we would realize just how complex and beautiful we are
