I wanted to write you a poem
But found my words
Froze on the tip of my pen
As I pressed it to paper,
Nothing capable of bringing to mind
Something so grand
-
And so I sat beneath
The giant dogwood tree
As an Autumn breeze danced
In the leaves that had
Changed their shade,
The fresh green of spring had faded
Turned to a watercolor
Of oranges and reds
Before the final breath
And their browned shells
Fell upon earth
-
They crumble to dust
Beneath overbearing sun
As mornings turn to cold,
A shudder best quenched
By a cup of coffee
And a newspaper that now sits idly
Waiting to be read,
A comic waiting for your laugh,
A crossword awaiting solving
-
I watch the leaves
Dance to the earth
As the sun too
Now takes its moment,
Turning sky from blue
To an array of color
Before night sets in
Bringing around
Another end.
