Another Lifetime

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished 2 months ago 1 min read

Verse 1

Dominic is 94,

Sits on the stoop by the old front door

Blanket on his knees, sun on his face

Watching the world rush past his place

His caretaker reads, quiet and kind

While he waves at the girls with a smile in his mind

Verse 2

Born in Brooklyn, raised with grace

Sicilian roots in a working-class space

“Be kind to the old, kiss the babies,” they said

“Go to Mass, find love, and wed”

He walked these blocks with a heart full of fire

Now he watches the girls and remembers desire

Chorus

Maybe in another lifetime

She would’ve been mine

We’d dance in the kitchen, laugh over wine

She’d make Sunday dinner, I’d teach the boys

How to be good men, how to find joy

Maybe in another lifetime, she will

Maybe in another lifetime, I’ll still

Be the man who carries her bags

And loves her with all that I have

Verse 3

The biddies gossip, folding chairs aligned

But Dominic’s heart is elsewhere in time

He sees her coming, perfume in the breeze

The single mom from 2C, with grace and ease

She touches his hand, he tries to rise

A gentleman still, with tears in his eyes

Bridge

He takes her groceries, slow but proud

The caretaker helps, without a sound

Her arm in his, like a dream come true

He breathes her in, like morning dew

And for a moment, he’s thirty-five

Alive with hope, with love revived

Chorus

Maybe in another lifetime

She would’ve been mine

We’d dance in the kitchen, laugh over wine

She’d make Sunday dinner, I’d teach the boys

How to be good men, how to find joy

Maybe in another lifetime, she will

Maybe in another lifetime, I’ll still

Be the man who carries her bags

And loves her with all that I have

Outro

Dominic smiles as the sun goes down

On 84th Street in his old hometown

He’s fragile, fading, but still he dreams

Of love that lingers in silent scenes

Maybe in another lifetime, she’ll know

The man who loved her, long ago

love poems
