Annie Don't Say Sorry

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished 3 months ago 2 min read

Album coming out soon.

Verse 1

Annie packed her summer dresses in the cold New England snow

Left a note beside her coffee cup saying, “I’ve got to go”

Two lunchboxes sitting on the counter

The porch light humming low

We watched her taillights turn the street to silver

Then she was a ghost

He was half her years and all her wind on hot Friday nights

A boy with the August sun in his soul and big dreams of city lights

A tattoo carved a lighthouse where his shoulder met his sleeve

She called it truth

We called it leaving,

She called it “I can finally breathe”

Chorus

Annie don’t say sorry,

Annie don’t look back

She says the past is just a suitcase that she’ll never unpack

Annie calls it destiny,

Annie calls it fate

Annie don’t say sorry,

Annie never carries her weight

(Verse 2)

Dad learned how to braid our hair with trembling, clumsy hands

Science fairs and sideline chairs with one less in the stands

Years of Birthday candles leaning toward a door that never moves

So, we wrapped our wishes in the smoke and tried to call it proof

Annie’s smiling through a filter on a brownstone balcony

Captions say, “You’ll never fly if you refuse to leave”

Comments flood with hearts and flames—she calls it being brave

We learned how to hold our breath beneath her tidal wave

Chorus

Annie don’t say sorry,

Annie don’t look back

She says the past is just a suitcase that she’ll never unpack

Annie calls it destiny,

Annie calls it fate

Annie don’t say sorry,

Annie never carries her weight

Bridge

“Life is short,” she writes at midnight, “Don’t judge my heart”

As if a vow’s a pair of wings you cut off when life gets hard

“It wasn’t me,

It was the years,

It was the dying spark”

She blames the weather for the storm and calls it art

Annie don't say sorry

Annie just breaks hearts.
