Anhedonia and I
will wait
by the fountain
where the sparrows bathe
and ponder why
great things must end
and why the ones
that don’t become boring.
We will play bystanders
with no stories to tell save the
ones carved into the corner
of our eyes by crows feet,
and the world won’t see us
because we’ve sat so long
on the stone steps,
next to the fountain
and her sparrows, that
we may as well be statues.
I could try to
enlighten you of my interiority,
but why would it matter?
Even if remembered,
would you care
about a stranger
and her complexities?
Eventually, Sonder
will find us, creep
into the hollows
of our mind, body, and soul
and make us question if
we were ever, honestly, important
when the world is full
of people.
Anhedonia and I
will have nothing to say
that may save us from this mundane
life except that we hope
to find entertainment tomorrow,
but Sonder will hold
our attention on the sparrows,
bathing in the fountain
like the main
characters of their own story.
Curiosity and I
will strip and plunge into the
penny lake,
and Anhedonia will wait
by the fountain,
sleeping while I bathe in
the lovely simplicity
of living.
