"Soldier and Death," Hans Larwin, 1917.
Factions and tribes and parties and nations
Intricate webs of ideology
Fantasies spawned by imaginations
Capering shadows of mythology

All bring you here, to the field of battle
Where cryptic old stories and older gods
Twist poetry into a death rattle
Under the spell of demagogic frauds

You turn all your talents to taking lives
Looking for eyes to, by violence, close
Thanks to war, my gluttonous spirit thrives
From your first conflict, laughing, I arose

Teaching you to destroy one another
Is my best chance to your brief lights smother

A somber scene and foreboding lines. Well wrought, D.J.!
"Twist poetry into a death rattle" I especially loved that line!
Excellent, and so poignant.
Just on a dark roll, today
Phew. This was hard to read. Beautifully crafted but so sad and so true C x💜
