An Ode to Lady Luck

Her subtle touch can tip the scales.

She comes when you least expect,

But you feel her when she’s near.

Her subtle touch can tip the scales.

Make losers shed their tears.

Your mouth is coated with sweet whiskey,

The lady’s kiss doth linger.

You scoop your winnings into stacks,

You shift them through your fingers.

Cigarette plumes infect the air,

The smell is not so pleasant.

You pray the lady sticks around,

Takes pity on the peasant.

But the lady doth not linger long,

Her feet held over fire.

Her kiss is fleeting, melting, fading,

You make the stakes more dire.

And then the lady moves away,

Her flippant ways are clear.

Leaving you with smaller piles,

And a heart chock full of fear.

Her absence leaves you cold and dry,

Without a leg to stand.

You know you shouldn’t be here,

Your wife and kids be damned.

You scorn the wiles of Lady Luck,

You curse her very name.

But deep inside you know the score,

Know you’re the one to blame.

And driving home with pockets light,

You’re banging on the wheel.

There’s no way they’ll understand,

How the lady’s kiss does feel.

Excellent! They say the part of the brain stimulated sexually is the also the section excited by a big gambling win. No wonder there’s so much addiction to it.

Yeah, gambling is not something I enjoy. I have seen so many people ruin their lives with it. Your poem depicts the reality really well.

  • This is why I don't gamble. Not only am I severely OCD, but the single brush of a lady's touch can easily make me lose all sense of perspective. Beautifully written, almost too much so for those afflicted with an inability to resist her whispering kiss.
