An Ode to Carpet
(an unexpected friend)
remove my shoes from my weary feet
peel off my socks and i feel complete
the moment i feel you plush under my toes
i know that i have been welcomed home
⚪️
you’re always there when i am tired
a soft bed to lie on when i desire
you caress my skin with the softest touch
and in return you don’t expect much
⚪️
a vacuum sometimes, every now and again
knowing at heart we’ll always be friends
you await my return day by day
unexpected pal, i know you will stay
⚪️
you carry the weight of my loved ones and me
always there whenever we need
but alas, the years, they surely take flight
and wear on you just ever so slight
⚪️
you’re worn, threadbare, broken, and tired
full of memories, but time to retire
the moment has come i’m afraid it’s true
your extraction, sadly, is long overdue
⚪️
strange people come in, they rip you out
it takes all i have in me not to shout
please, not my friend, who’s seen it all
my family grow, my rises and falls
⚪️
my intimate moments, my vulnerable too
though i know that you’re old, i wish it weren’t true
you’ve seen joy, silliness, dancing, and laughter
sadness, heartbreak, and all that comes after
⚪️
my dog’s best friend, his favorite bed
he, as well, laments your end
you’ll be replaced with hardwood, or vinyl
sturdier stuff… and it all feels so final
⚪️
i’ll miss you, dear friend, who has been through so much
i’ll always remember your soft, friendly touch
