An Epiphany

And she suddenly understood

Last night, as she tossed and turned, she had an epiphany; suddenly she understood,

She scares you! In fact, you’re terrified of who she is,

She always thought she wasn’t enough — not nearly good enough, not loving enough, just not enough for you,

When in reality, she’s too much for you to handle; what a relief this epiphany is.

******

She stands tall when you crumble, she’ll face life head on,

Even with tears teeming from her eyes she’ll fight for what is right,

She’ll do what needs to be done, you’ll heavily procrastinate, not from laziness but from frozen inability,

And when the going gets really tough, she’ll turn up with boxing gloves on, while you’ll run from the fight.

******

She loves with a rare intensity, a gift for a mature man,

But as a boy you fear her heart, because it sees your darkness,

Highlights your insecurities, rides you to become a better person,

And bares you to the world in your immature starkness.

******

She speaks freely of what is in her mind, of what breaks her bleeding heart,

But honesty is not a concept you can understand, doesn’t fit in with your narrative or prepared story,

Honesty won’t give you the attention you desire, the excitement you need to spice up your life,

You’d prefer to make out you’re the hero, one despondent soul in its full glory.

******

She goes after what she wants, you freeze in inaction,

She’s a winner and you realise you don’t have what it takes to compete,

She’s a stayer, she’ll work to resolve the issues at hand,

You’ll run and hide, leaving your part to play totally incomplete.

******

She is the provider, the role model, the disciplinarian of her family, raising them alone,

You throw your responsibilities over your shoulder, unable to stand and face the day,

She’ll break with a smile on her face and take care of what needs to be done,

And you’ll be hidden in some corner, scared of what she may say.

******

The roles are backwards to how the world perceives them to be,

Which is why you are rarely anywhere to be found,

Demarcated you’ll change the narrative to suit,

While she’ll get on with life, not needing you around.

******

She now understands that the end was always yours to threaten her with,

Used to manipulate her to get what you believe you deserve,

To force your idea of love upon a heart freely given,

When in all honesty, she was too much woman in every bone and feminine curve.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
