America, Land of the Free and Home of Betrayal
A Free Verse Beat Poem

America, land of the free and home of the brave.
But what makes this place so free? Citizens are killed by police for the color of their skin.
Inequality in schools is an ongoing pandemic.
We are not free to be who we are or love who we love without judgement and ignorance.
More like America, the land of betrayal and hate.
I've watched as our generation is filled with hate and in tears screaming for older generations to just listen.
Black Lives Matter.
The people who swore to protect us are destroying so many.
Cold blooded murder.
The system fails as they let these murderers walk free while having my friends behind bars on felonies.
For what?
A minor drug charge.
We chanted their names the summer of 2020.
Tamir Rice. Breonna Taylor. George Floyd. Ahmaud Arbery. Kendrick Johnson. Trayvon Martin.
Say Their Names!
We marched peacefully down the streets to be met with mace, rubber bullets and to be beaten down by those "protecting us".
Then when we get angry and fight back-- its labeled a riot and us dangerous.
We demand a change.
We demand this system be ripped apart and gutted.
Our parents sit in the background shaming us for standing up for what we believe in.
For what's right.
Equality. Justice. Peace. Love.
Don't even get me started on how our parents shame us for being who we are.
Our LBGTQ+ community is struggling to find their place in this world.
Children are killing themselves due to the hate and judgement they face by religion.
People quote the Bible and say it's a sin to be gay.
It's a sin to be any other race but white.
It's a sin to be who we are born to be.
But who are you?
Who are you to tell me I cannot love another female? Or he can't love another he? Or that she's wrong for feeling like she was born into the wrong gender's body and needs to fix the mistake made?
Who are you to claim somebody is going to hell for not being born white?
Stop claiming that these things can be cured by religion.
Our generation is real, we love who we are.
We have confidence and compassion.
Shame on you.
Do you see being gay in the Ten Commandments? Or being black?
Our generation is struggling to pick up the pieces that had been blown up in the past.
We have strength in numbers and a will for change.
We will not stand for it anymore. We will defeat this system. We will defeat these ideas of what's right and what's wrong.
We will be who we are without doubt.
Without hesitation.
We will rise up and conquer these horrific demons prior generations burdened us with.
Shout out to us millennials and gen z's because I see us going through it.
Fighting to make a change and take the crown that was wrongfully given.
We will win this mental civil war and really own up to this being the real America.
We are strong.
We are love.
We are justice.
We are dominant.
To the future....
America, the real land of the free, home of the brave.
