Alphabet Soup

A fictional haibun poem about one of my favourite comfort foods from my childhood. This poem is speaking from the main character Elizabeths perspective.

The main character, Elizabeth came home from school, after not having much to eat during the school day. Elizabeth entered her tiny wooden house and bundled herself up with light coloured denim jeans, white snowboots, her most-loved checkered pink and purple sweater, her sparkly magenta winter coat and her wavy, shoulder-length strawberry blonde hair was tied up in pigtails. She loooked forward coming home and having soup for dinner. She loved eating her mother's homemade alphabet soup that she’s made since Elizabeth was two years old. She was only a little girl and an only child of a single mom who enjoyed cooking and spending time with her daughter. Her famous Spicy Tomato ABC Stew that she serves Elizabeth twice a week on winter school nights. Elizabeth loved using her yellow porcelain bowl that her grandmother bought her before she passed away from old age.

On a frosty winter evening, I smell the aromatic scent of brewing scarlet tomato soup and yellow spongy noodles cooking in the silver pot. I hear the loud pouring of hot red liquid and egg noodles into my yellow porcelain bowl. I walk to the wooden table and hear my stomach rage! I grab my shiny metal spoon and eat like a ravenous pig!

With my little spoon,

I find some tiny letters-

alphabet noodles.

The soup is still as hot as an oven, so I quietly blow small spoonfuls of brewing and salty scarlet water, as I touch the warmth of steam travelling from my bowl to my face. I taste the flavourful, but mild sweetness and spice of tomatoes, peppers and garlic. My tummy is now silent as a sleeping baby, because I pacified it with yummy food.

Into my mouth,

Into my belly;

Red ABC stew!
