All These Words
Parody Poem
All these words keep falling down
Falling down, falling down
All these words keep falling down
My dear reader
*
I’ll build them up with structured forms
Structured forms, structured forms
I’ll build them up with structured forms
My dear reader
*
Structured forms won’t bear the weight
Bear the weight, bear the weight
Structured forms won’t bear the weight
My dear reader
*
I’ll build them up with rhyme and meter
Rhyme and meter, rhyme and meter
I’ll build them up with rhyme and meter
My dear reader
*
Rhyme and meter, I’ve not got
I’ve not got, I’ve not got
Rhyme and meter, I’ve not got
My dear reader
*
All these words keep falling down
Falling down, falling down
All these words keep falling down
My dear reader
Author’s Note: Needed a bit of a reminder today not to take myself too seriously, so when the tune for “London Bridge” got stuck in my head, I just decided to go with it. The result: a structured and rhyming dig at structure and rhyme.
A lot of my poems attempt to adhere to formal structures but I do take some liberties, especially with meter because it just doesn’t click in my head. But since being on Vocal I’ve actually written a few free verse poems which I’d never attempted before and I’ve actually enjoyed the process, so I’m excited to try some more (not with this piece obviously).
Also when I first became active on Vocal, I published a parody of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” as a teaser for my Whodunit Challenge entry and I had a lot of fun with it, as I did with this one. I suppose something silly can be refreshing from time to time!
If you’re still reading this, thanks for humoring me! Back to regularly scheduled programming soon!
Here’s my other parody piece:
And a couple of those free verse experiments:

Okay I just have to point it out because no-one else has so far, and if you already know, I'm sorry! But that's Tower Bridge, not London😂 Blame Fergie. Free verse is both easy and hard at the same time, and I struggle with it. Often it feels kinda...blabby, like you're just writing something without anything to it- rhyme or rhythm or structure or form. I get that's the point, but I do love a good A-B-A-B haha.
Naturally, I love this high brow poem!😂✅
You wrote it 23 days ago, and I needed a laugh this morning, so it found me. Really enjoyed this, D.K!
Now it's stuck in my head too, thanks DK. Only kidding - I am smiling though it bought memories way back from when I was a little girl. Too far back-
Clever use of a song stuck in your head! Words do seem to just fall apart sometimes, don't they...great work! :)
Just discovered I've been tapping my foot all the time! And now the rhythm got stuck in my head...
Hahahahahahaha I couldn't stop grinning while singing this. It was so clever and creative!
I sang along as I read this. Such fun! Clever parody, DK!
~ 🎵 Humm 🎶 ~
Love it! And you made me think of home today too! Have a great weekend.
Love it, D.K.! I will now have this song stuck in my head for the rest of the day 😅 it's always good to keep things light and fun!
DK, this was everything I needed today!!! You best believe I hummed/ sang this to the tune of that song and had a giant smile on my face the whole time!!! I loved this!!!
D.K. Shepard's having fun Having fun, Having fun D.K. Shepard's having fun, Here on Vocal! Ha ha!
Enjoyed reading your parody!
This was refreshing for me this morning. And it bought a smile to my face, remembering ol London Bridges. I hadn't thought about that one for a long time. Very Well done!!!
There should always be time for silly and light-hearted :) Thank you for sharing, I needed this bit of joy this morning.
Ah, this is brilliant, DK. Seriously. I love when writers just let loose and kick it free and easy and it's a great lesson for our egos and the stresses that sometimes come with "serious writing" to just not forget to enjoy the process of throwing some words together in a fun and creative way. Loved this and it's always good to see a different side to my favourite writers - of which you know you're included! Well done!
