All’s Not Necessarily As It All Seems
This I learnt from my young daughter

My daughter would disappear for hours on end,
But would never let me in on where she’d go or what she’d do,
Which made me more curious than a cat,
Trying to figure out what she’s hiding from me and you.
***
She would ask me the strangest of things,
Like can water animals eat human food,
Veggies, raw meat or even bread,
Or is any of this something they should exclude?
***
She’d next ask if water animals could speak,
Like to other animals or even human beings,
I answered her queries with a resounding no,
Although I get the feeling she was disagreeing.
***
Another question she asked,
Is it possible she could breathe underwater,
I looked at her strangely,
Wondering if she is really my daughter.
***
Oh, don’t get me wrong,
I’m well aware she is mine,
But where are these queries coming from,
As she’s only just nine.
***
So I decided late one night,
After she had laid down her head,
That I’d do my research,
While she’s still in bed.
***
Armed with all the things I know about her,
I decided to follow her the next time she disappeared,
Just to ensure she’s not up to mischief,
Or in any danger, as I greatly feared.
***
I stealthily crept along behind her,
Convinced she couldn’t hear me and didn’t have a clue,
As she skipped and sang while wandering along the beach,
I have to admit I’m terribly curious at what she’s here to do.
***
When suddenly she darts in and under the waves,
My heart almost jumps out of my chest,
I waited patiently for her head to break through the water,
And when it didn’t, I became horribly stressed.
***
I raced into the water and dived to the floor below,
Believing she must have gotten caught on something ridiculously sharp,
Imagine my surprise as I see her underwater, calmly standing on a rocky ledge,
Holding a conversation with a large magic carp.
***
This shouldn’t be possible,
Surely it’s nothing more than a dream,
But I do now understand her questions,
And she’s taught me that all’s not necessarily as it all seems.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

This was just so magical! I'm obsessed with mermaids and the sea. And I've always wished I can breathe underwater and talk to all the creatures there. This was so wonderful!
Wonderful children 's poem. Fabulous fantasy💕
