we
all carry within us
what no other knows
both joy and pain
love, sorrow and hope
the sun rises and sets
the clouds come and go
still
surrounded by people
we all end up alone
born with the need
to belong with another
the struggle to be whole
held together as one
alone
can eat you alive
so we struggle
each day to survive
we smile and we cry
we dare and we dream
count the years that pass by
remove the heart from our sleeves
depending
a weakness
a poisonous disease
a spreading flaw
to admit that you need
hide it from exposure
hide it at all costs
keeping composure
absorbing what’s lost
society
begs you
insists you are strong
capable to stand solely
a soldier standing alone
we are daily prepared
for our last, final breath
we are
alone
when we’re born
and will be
as we meet death

Theoretically, it seems like hewing our paths would reduce both conflict and psychological injury. But we are gregarious animals. We both need and want people who care about us. This is beautifully written but bleak, Kelli. Reality is soul-crushing far to often.
Such a poignant poem. Well done.
Well done , the truth cometh.
Absolute truth!
The hard truth, well expressed.
