After the Show

A poem based on Edward Hopper's "New York Movie 1939"

By Jennifer ChildersPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

In the atrium alone

An empty trove

Everyone is in there

And I am alone

The words from the stage

Still haunting my brain

And no one to help me unpack what I've seen

I want to go back inside

I want to be with the audience

But what does it matter anyway?

The players won’t notice if one person is gone

No one is coming to find me

This is what I’m used to

This is what I deserve

I want someone to please come look for me

But there are no footsteps

Floating down the stairs to the corridor

Nobody asks me how I feel

Or if I’m okay

But this is just another day

It’s all I've ever known

Ekphrastic
